What is loop engineering?

Loop engineering means designing the repeatable process around an AI.

Instead of asking the AI again and again by hand, you set up a simple cycle:

  1. The AI tries something.
  2. It checks what happened.
  3. It uses that result to decide the next move.
  4. It stops when the goal is reached.

That is a loop.

The important part is not the word “agent” or the newest model. The important part is feedback. If the AI gets a result it should react to, a loop can help.

Why loops exist

A normal prompt is one request and one answer.

That works for many tasks:

But some work cannot be finished in one answer.

The AI may need to check whether something worked. It may need to react to an error. It may need to compare a few options. It may need to ask a person before doing something risky.

That is where loops become useful.

Prompt vs fixed steps vs loop

Use one prompt when the task has one clear answer.

Use fixed steps when the order is already known:

  1. read the form
  2. summarize it
  3. send it to the right team

Use a loop when the next step depends on what happened after the AI tried something.

That is the whole difference.

A simple example

Imagine you want an AI to draft a support reply.

One prompt might be enough if you only need a first draft.

A loop helps if the AI must also check the reply before it is finished:

  1. Draft the reply.
  2. Check whether it answers the customer’s question.
  3. If something is missing, revise it.
  4. Stop when the reply is clear.

The AI is not just writing. It is using the check to decide whether to keep going.

What every useful loop needs

A loop needs a few basic pieces.

A clear goal. The AI needs to know what “done” means.

A way to check the result. This could be a checklist, a test, a customer response, a review, or a person saying yes.

A memory of what happened. The AI should not repeat the same failed attempt forever.

A stop rule. The loop should stop when it succeeds, when a person needs to decide, or when it has tried enough times.

A safety rule. Risky actions should wait for human approval.

Without those pieces, a loop can become an expensive repeat button.

Ask this:

Is there anything for the AI to react to after it acts?

If yes, use a loop.

If no, use one prompt or fixed steps.
