How to build your first AI loop

True leverage is not knowing the perfect way to talk to an AI.

It is building a small system that talks to the AI for you, checks the result, and knows when to stop.

That system is a loop.

But most AI tasks should not be loops. A loop is only useful when the AI gets something new to react to after it acts: an error, a reply, a review, a test result, a price, a file, or a human decision.

If there is nothing useful to react to, you are paying for a loop and getting a prompt.

The basic idea

A loop is a repeatable cycle:

  1. Give the AI a clear goal.
  2. Let it try one thing.
  3. Check what happened.
  4. Use that result to choose the next step.
  5. Stop when the goal is reached.

Example:

Goal: draft a helpful reply to every new customer email.
Try: write a reply.
Check: does the reply answer the customer's question?
Repeat: revise if something is missing.
Stop: the reply is clear, or a person needs to approve it.

That is a loop because the AI uses the check to decide what to do next.

What your first loop needs

You do not need a big system to start. You need six simple pieces.

1. A clear goal

The goal should say what “done” means.

Weak goal:

Handle customer emails.

Better goal:

For each new customer email, draft a reply that answers the question.
If the email involves billing, refunds, or legal issues, ask a person.

Clear goals prevent endless loops.

2. A check

The check tells the loop whether the work is good enough.

For a customer email, the check might be:

For a website task, the check might be:

No check means no real loop. It is just repeated prompting.

3. Memory

A loop needs to remember what already happened.

This can be very simple. A note, a table, or a file is enough.

Example:

Task: reply to customer email #184
Tried: wrote a first reply
Check result: reply missed the refund question
Next: revise reply and include refund policy
Needs person: no

Memory stops the AI from making the same mistake again and again.

4. Tools

The loop needs access to the things it must read or change.

Examples:

Give the loop only the tools it needs.

If the loop only drafts emails, it should not be able to send them without approval. If it only writes a report, it should not be able to change customer data.

5. Human approval

Some actions should pause for a person.

Use human approval for:

The AI can prepare the work. The person makes the risky decision.

6. A stop rule

Every loop needs a limit.

Good stop rules:

Without a stop rule, a loop can waste time and money.

The safest way to start

Do not start with a loop that can change important things on its own.

Start with three levels.

Level 1: report only

The loop reads information, writes a summary, and stops.

Example:

Every morning, read new support tickets.
Group them by topic.
Flag anything urgent.
Write a short report.
Do not reply to customers yet.

This is the safest first loop because it does not change anything important.

Level 2: draft for review

The loop prepares work, but a person approves it.

Example:

Read new support tickets.
Draft replies.
Check each reply against a simple checklist.
Ask a person before sending.

This saves time while keeping a human in control.

Level 3: act with strict limits

Only let the loop act on its own after it has worked well many times.

Even then, keep the task narrow.

Example:

For password reset questions only:
draft the standard reply,
check that it includes the reset link,
send it,
and stop after one attempt.

Do not give a new loop broad permission to do everything.

Common ways loops fail

The goal is too vague

“Make this better” is not a stop condition.

Use a clear result instead:

The loop has no memory

If the AI forgets what it tried, it can repeat the same failed answer.

Save a short note after each pass.

The loop has too much freedom

A beginner loop should have narrow permissions.

Let it draft before it sends. Let it report before it edits. Let it ask before it changes something important.

The loop keeps trying forever

Set a limit.

Three tries is often enough for a first version. If it still fails, ask a person.

A simple first loop to build

Start with a daily review loop.

Goal:
Summarize new customer messages once a day.

Try:
Read each message and label it as question, bug, billing, or urgent.

Check:
Does each message have a label and a short summary?

Human approval:
Anything urgent or billing-related goes to a person.

Stop:
Stop when all new messages are summarized, or after 30 minutes.

This is useful, safe, and easy to understand.

Once that works, you can let the loop draft replies. Later, you can let it handle very narrow replies on its own.

The main rule

Before building any loop, ask:

Is there anything for the AI to react to after it acts?

If yes, a loop may help.

If no, use one prompt or fixed steps.

The goal is not to automate everything. The goal is to choose the smallest setup that handles the task safely.
